Following
participation at the Spring Fair in Birmingham in February 2008,
products of human ingenuity from Tanzania secured export markets in
UK, Spain and the US.
Tanzania
Trade Centre in London in cooperation with the Village Collection in
UK coordinated Tanzania’s Participation at this Show which was
Organized at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from 3 to 7
February, 2008.
This
Participation followed a Product study which was carried out in
October 2007 to identify Arts and Craft Products from Tanzania, which
have the potential to capture external markets.
Support
in this exercise was received from the Board of External Trade (BET)
and Small Industry Development Organization (SIDO), for which products
selected were dispatched timely for the exhibition.
Products
included Makonde wood and Stone carvings, Loom textiles, Basketry,
Masai beautification products such as beads, bangles, etc.
Others included handmade batiks, khanga’s and paintings by
various Artists.
As
a result of this participation, the Director of the Village Collection
received many enquiries and orders
whose value could not immediately be ascertained but has indicated
that such products made by human hands using materials naturally
available in the country have the potential to penetrate external
markets provided consistency is maintained for quality and delivery.
